I’ve always been a fan of super heroes and comic books but have only recently really found a certain love for graphic novels. There is one out there for everyone! So even if you’re not a super hero fan, or think you wouldn’t enjoy reading comics, give graphic novels a try. They’re written more like books and there’s bound to be one with a theme that’s your fancy.
The Plain Janes takes the reader(s) back to high school with all of its challenges and heartaches. Jane and her group of friends all consider art to be extremely important but the rest of their town may need some help in appreciating acts of creativity.
Cecil Castellucci does a fantastic job at capturing what high school is/can be like for teenage girls. Jane is the new kid in town which is always a scary thing but even more so when you’re a teenager. Luckily, Jane discovers she is not alone and her interests are shared with newfound friends. Add in a love interest, parents who just don’t understand, self-discovery, and you have all the makings of a fun, realistic graphic novel.
The Plain Janes actually made me feel slightly nostalgic for high school, which is weird since I hated high school. I think I wish my experience had been something more like what the Janes have. Theirs is a group friendship yet they all retain their unique personalities and quirks. There are no cat fights found here and everyone is equally included. Almost sounds too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and check out this quick, enjoyable, fun read!
