Read by…Cat Crawfield (Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost)
Cat Crawfield is a vampire killing badass. Halfway to the Grave is book one in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. There are 7 books in the main story line and a handful of other spin offs and short stories.
Cat’s done pretty well hunting vampires on her own so far, and her success is partly due to being half vampire and partly being fueled by vengeance (her mother was raped by a recently turned vampire causing her unusual pedigree). But when she crosses paths with the dangerous and sexy vampire, Bones, her entire life and way of thinking gets turned upside down.
In Halfway to the Grave, Bones has captured Cat and is interrogating her on how she knows how to kill vampires if she isn’t associated with any. She replies,
“Oh, I’d read a hundred books or more about our…your kind after hearing about my father. They all varied.” – Chapter 2, Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Below you’ll find some of the books that Cat would have probably read before meeting Bones:
First we have The Vampire Hunter’s Handbook: A Field Guide to the Paranormal. It’s a quick read and small (easy to carry on the go!). It even has an area in the back for field notes. Next up, The Vampire Watcher’s Handbook: A Guide for Slayers. This book is a bit longer and written in the style of a journal or notebook. Vampire Forensics is the more factual book and has information about vampire folk lore and legend. Ah, The Little Black Book of Cocktails. Cat finds it best to hunt at bars. Being half vampire, drinking doesn’t have the same effect as it does on humans. Her go to drink of choice is the classic gin and tonic, but over the six years of staking (no pun intended) out bars to kill vampires I’m sure she tried a few others. Lastly, we find the autobiography of Ronda Rousey (the UFC’s first and current Woman’s Bantamweight Champion), My Fight / Your Fight. If there was ever a female badass that could rival Cat, it would be Ronda Rousey. Don’t believe me? Google her. Don’t worry, I’ll wait… Yeah, impressive, right?
So we’ve looked at pre-Bones books. What about after Cat met Bones?
Yeah, you probably saw that coming…I’m sure Cat quickly picked up these bad boys.
Further into the serious we meet ghosts, ghouls, demons, and a slew of other interesting characters including Vlad Tepesh (who has his own spin off books by Frost), Marie Laveau, and Henrich Kramer. Naturally, Cat would most likely be heading straight for the library after encountering these historical power houses.
And before we go, another female badass who happens to be a historical power house who has ties to Cat (This Side of the Grave, Night Huntress Book 5):
